Global Detroit’s 11-point strategy to globalize the southeast Michigan region works towards the achievement of 4 outcomes, one of which is to “Attract and retain international talent, including international students, in the region.”

In 2012, Global Detroit launched the Global Talent Retention Initiative, the nation’s first-ever program dedicated to retaining international talent, with Athena Trentin as its Executive Director. Since its launch, GTRI has already been signed on as an integral piece to Governor Snyder’s statewide Global Michigan program and received support from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC).

GTRI focuses on strengthening and diversifying the state’s economy through the retention of top international talent. GTRI provides international students and local employers with training and resources on relevant immigration regulations, information on finding a job and working in Michigan, and help with cross-cultural issues that both employers and international applicants may experience during the hiring process.
